See our offer of tours of Roskilde

Right by the fiord with the same name lies one of the oldest cities of the kingdom. Roskilde was the religious, commercial and political centre before Copenhagen was declared to be the Danish capital. Its name means “the springs of Roar”. Roar was a legendary king of Vikings, and the city has a few natural springs that explain the name Roskilde.

Here, it is possible to visit the Viking Ship Museum, learn about the life and conquests of these Scandinavian warriors and embark a Viking ship.

In the Cathedral, which is protestant today and part of the World Heritage List, it is possible to visit the tombs of Danish kings and queens, hear about their lives, works, customs, anecdotes and legends. All Danish monarchs have been buried here since the Middle Ages which makes the Cathedral truly unique place.

The city has a Rock Museum, a university, and organises the largest annual music festival in Northern Europe: Roskilde Festival. It also offers the possibility to savour typical Nordic food and Danish beer, one of the best beers in the world, shops with the latest fashion pieces and a grand variety of items – all of this without a great distance in-between. You can enjoy Viking music and see the best modern music bands in the world.

If preferred, you can go for a peaceful walk and breathe in fresh air with the delicate and relaxing smell of caramelised almonds and flowers. In the atmosphere of quietude, you can also uncover the secret to a welfare society.
